| Abstract | Abstract : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of computer -assisted learning alongside the traditional method in teaching the "Environmental Pollution Unit " to first level secondary science students and development of their positive environmental attitudes. One hundred and twelve students in Bahrain were involved in the study, who registerd in the " Living Organisms and the Environment " course. The sample was divided into two groups, the experimental and the control groups. The experimental group (n=56)studied the course using the computer as an aid beside the traditional teaching method. The teaching programme consist of a number of frames, which may include one more of the following: Scientific and environmental knowledge. Various questions with a continuous and varied feedback. Different activities and in structions. Some environmental illustrations reflecting some aspects of pollution. The control group (n=56) studied the course through the traditional method only. In order to compare the two groups, the researcher used an achievement test and an attitude scale to measure the students achievement and attitudes towards the environment before and after the experiment. The research resulted in the following: 1- There were statistical significant differences (0.01) in the post test between the achievement of the experimental and the control groups, in favour of the experimental group. 2- There were statistical significant differences (0.01) in the post application of the attitudes scale, between the experimental and the control groups, in favour of the experimental group. 3- There were statistical significant differences (0.01) between the first post application (administered immmmediately after the completion of the experiment) and the second post application of the attitude scale (administered 3 months later), in favour of the former application regarding the control group. No statistical significant differences were found regarding the experimental group. 4- There was a positive relationship between the academic achievement and the positive environmental attitudes for the experimental group. No statistical significant differences were found regarding the control group. | |
