| Abstract | ABSTRACT : The environmental conditions in Tubli Bay have been deteriorating continuously for many years due to the reclamations around it, which reduced its area by 40% and destroyed most of the mangroves northwest of the Bay; the discharges of wastewater from a number of sources, mainly the Tubli wastewater treatment plant; and the discharges of silt from sand washing in the southern part of the Bay. The problem is aggravated further by restricting the inflow and outflow of the Bay due to the installment of cairns ahead of Sitra Causeway Bridge, the construction of a culvert under Majlis Al Tawoon Highway, and the Ma'meer Channel. Nowadays, new plans are set to construct a new bridge in place of the old Sitra Bridge and two new ones are in the pipeline. All of these developments form a driving force behind this work. The main objective is to investigate the existing flushing characteristics of the Bay and potential options to improve the flushing capacity that could be able to eliminate contaminants. To this end MIKE 21 model was used, it was calibrated and validated to the bay situation and then set up for predicting the flow characteristics and improvement options. The calibration was based on the results of a work done by COWI ALMOAYED GULF Company and validation by actual water level measurement at a point situated north of the Bay. Simulations were conducted for various scenarios illustrating the possible situations that could improve water flow in the bay and flush contaminants. The results of the simulations indicated that flow in the Bay is divided into distinct areas; inner Bay and south of Ras Sanad. Flushing the inner Bay is mainly by tidal prism mechanism and it is effective, and south of Ras Sanad by the bouncing of water at both sides of the culvert under Majlis Al Tawoon Highway. However, it is been concluded that flushing by water circulation around Nabih Saleh Island is negligible. Furthermore, it has been found that dredging a channel south of Ras Sand to Ma'meer Channel will not have much effect in water flushing inside the Bay. On the basis of the results it is recommended that in order to improve the water quality in the Bay all waste effluents are ceased and settled sludge at the deep area north of Tubli Bay be capped artificially or naturally by suspended solids deposition in the long run. | |
