| Abstract | Abstract : This thesis explores the cognitive and rhetorical functions of metaphor and metonymy in Arab and Western media discourse on Artificial Intelligence, using two corpora of over 100,000 words per language. It adopts a mixed-methods design grounded in Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Extended Conceptual Metaphor Theory, and Critical Metaphor and Metonymy Analysis. The study systematically identifies and interprets figurative expressions to delineate the conceptual keys, frame structures, and ideological undercurrents shaping media representations of Artificial Intelligence. The findings reveal that while both corpora share common metaphorical patterns and overarching conceptual keys, they diverge in frequency, frame-level mappings, rhetorical interactions, and cultural underpinnings. Notably, English media tends to anthropomorphize Artificial Intelligence through the prevalent use of human metaphors and frequently frames it through polarized lenses, ranging from technophilia to technophobia. In contrast, Arabic media tends to reify Artificial Intelligence comparatively more through the predominant use of economic and object metaphors and constructs it via discourses of utility and national progression. This thesis also addresses key methodological challenges in cross-cultural and cross-linguistic metaphor research, including limited Arabic natural language processing tools and the absence of a dedicated Arabic FrameNet. Future research is encouraged to incorporate diachronic analyses of metaphor and other methodologies to better trace figurative language circulation in global Artificial Intelligence discourse.
