| Abstract | Abstract: The target of this thesis is to study the concept of causality in the Arabic grammatical system depending mainly on the interpretations and assumptions supported by Ibn-jinni concerning this subject. Causality is considered to be one of the most important concepts in the Islamic culture, because it forms the primary proof for the existence of the creator. In the Islamic culture the concept of cause is evident; it does not need to be proved at all nor does it need theoretical or philosophical background to be deduced it. In addition it is innate. Different interpretations of the proposition of cause by Islamic thinkers lead to the existence of various Islamic schools each of which adopted a particular view of the concept. Some believe that all things even abnormal phenomena have logical causes, at the level of creation and legislation. The most famous adoptive school of this belief is Al-motazela, which believes in righteousness and suitability, meaning that God's willingness is always the best choice for creatures. This theory stemmed from dogmatics of Al-fiqh (the study of adoration and jurisprudence), and was then transferred to the Arabic grammatical system Grammarians who were influenced by this theory believe that whatever language contains, even the abnormal features, has a logical cause Ibn-jinni, one of the believers in this theory, assumes that Arabic is the best language of all, and that it doesn't contain any single letter neither a word nor a structure but in the ever most appropriate place. He claims that Arabic supports the speaker with the best opportunities to express his thought and to reach his target very easily. On this basis he suggests causes for all linguistic components in Arabic starting with the single letter, that he believes to be the best letters of all for the quality of variety of the point of articulation and their logical significance in respect to the meanings when they are produced. Ibn-jinni suggests causes for many other linguistic matters such as the reason why most Arabic words are of triletteral root and not of two or four, the relation among words having some letters in common, parsing causes and all other linguistic propositions. In this thesis, the first chapter is primarly devoted to the study of concept of cause in the islamic thought the arguments that are aroused about it with emphasis on the effects of that on linguistic researches in general and on the theory of Ibn-jinni in particular. The second chapter deals with the cultural resources of Ibn-jinni, and with both dialectic and juristic schools showing the influence his schools have on the concept of cause. The third chapter focuses on the position of the concept of cause in Ibn-jinni's book (Al-khasaes), the relation it has to the book's subject how deep the book treats the concept characteristics of the causes Ibn-jinni fills his book with. and the The fourth chapter deals with the theoretical concept and the philosophical principles of the linguistic cause as seen by Ibn-jinni; the difference between the linguistic cause and the dialectic cause on the one hand and the difference between the linguistic cause and the juristic cause on the other hand. The fifth and the final chapter deals with the use of the concept of cause in Al-khasaes, how the concept of cause as suggested by Ibn-jinni influences his treating of the language; the way he deals with it, and the division of its subjects. In other words, how his theoretical vision of the concept of cause influences his study of the language since he is considered to be one of the most famous Arabic linguists. The thesis is concluded with a summary, showing the main results of the study. | |
