| Abstract | Abstract: The need for wireless connection has increased due to the development in the social media, mobile application, and the limitations of the Wi-Fi in some applications such as hospitals, airplanes, hazardous environments. Therefore, researchers started investigating the use of Visible Light as a medium for communication (VLC) which is also known as Light Fidelity (Li-Fi). This thesis aims to fill the gap in the previous research by studying the effect of the weather influence such as sandstorm and dust storm on the outdoor VLC applications mainly in the Arab Gulf country which was not investigated before. In addition, the result of this thesis can be beneficial worldwide because most studies have focused on the application and improving the VLC for indoor purpose and a few studies have investigated the effect of the sun and the fog for outdoor VLC applications. The work in this thesis is based on theoretical and simulation framework. A mathematical model has been derived for dust and sand particles and is used in the simulation. The simulation is conducted using Vehicular to road VLC (V2LC) Outdoor application and is aimed to study the effect of sandstorm and dust storm of the Gulf environment as a weather influence on the use of VLC. The main contribution of this research is to fill the gap in the literature as no research is conducted to study the sandstorm effect which is an important weather influence in the Gulf region. The study is conducted using different sand particles size and concludes that sandstorm and dust storm affect VLC connectivity due to the density of the sand and dust particles. It is noticed that when the road visibility decreases to less than 1Km and the sandstorm particles radius is less than 36 micrometers, the density of the storm becomes high and the maximum distance that could be achievable is below 100 m. Also, the simulation shows that when the distance between the transmitter and the receiver is 2.864 for the low-density clay sandstorm, power received is -10.234 dBm and the SNR is 100 dB and BER reaches 4.6E-46. Besides, when the distance increases to 500m, the power received reaches -54.166 dBm and the SNR is recorded 25.693 dB and BER increases up to 3.8E-13. Finally, the type of the sandstorm particles has an effect on the communication as well. This is because different particles have different refractive indexes which affect the medium by the absorption or reflection of the light. The results of this study show general similarities with past research conducted to investigate the effect of fog and rain on VLC. The work of this thesis fills a gap in the current VIC research and encourages future research to develop the findings using real prototype system. | |
