Abstract
Abstract : This study aimed to explore the relationship between perfectionism and marital distress among couples addicted to cyberspace in Saudi Arabia by modeling the relationship between these variables. The study analyzed the levels of perfectionism across its dimensions (strict, narcissistic, and critical) and marital distress across its dimensions (cognitive, emotional, and communicative), in addition to examining differences based on variables such as gender, marital duration, educational level, age, and family income. The study used a comparative correlational descriptive approach, and a sample of 270 couples who scored high on the cyberspace addiction screening questionnaire was selected. The study relied on the Perfectionism Scale (Belfaqih et al., 2023) and the Marital Distress Scale (developed by the researcher), with data analyzed using SPSS and AMOS software. The results showed that strict perfectionism was the most prevalent, followed by narcissistic and critical perfectionism, and that addicted couples exhibited a moderate level of perfectionism. Additionally, communicative marital distress was the most common, followed by cognitive and emotional distress, with an overall high level of marital distress. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between perfectionism and marital distress, as well as significant differences between husbands and wives in strict perfectionism and all dimensions of marital distress, favoring wives. Significant differences were found in the communicative distress dimension based on marital duration exceeding 10 years, with no significant differences in educational level, age, or income. The study confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed model in predicting perfectionism, marital distress, and cyberspace addiction, and recommended the development of counseling programs to reduce communicative marital distress among addicted couples.
