| Abstract | Abstract : The aim of the present study is to investigate the problems of teaching and evaluating extensive reading skills in English at female public secondary schools in some cities of the Eastern Province in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through exploring teachers' and students' perceptions towards instructional practice employed in teaching and evaluating reading skills of second grade secondary students. The tool for data collection is a set of two questionnaires. The sample, selected randomly, consisted of 172 Saudi teachers holding no lower than a B.A. and each with at least 3 years' experience in teaching English and 2 years experience in teaching second secondary grade and 567 Saudi female second secondary grade school students. This thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter gives a brief discussion on teaching extensive reading in English in the public schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Statement of the problem, the purpose of the study, its questions, its significance, limitations and definitions of terms are also included. Chapter two discusses the nature of reading, intensive and extensive reading, silent reading skills, objectives of silent reading, instruction of reading, instructional aids, motivation, the teacher as a reader, reading activities and materials, classroom organization and assessment of reading. Chapter three surveys the literature related to the field of teaching and evaluation of reading skills. These studies are classified into three groups: studies related to the teaching of reading skills, studies related to the assessment of students' reading comprehension and studies aimed at investigating teachers' attitudes, views and perceptions. Chapter four gives a description of the study design, the population and the sample, instruments of data collection, the two questionnaires and their validity and reliability, distribution and collecting of the questionnaires and the scoring and analysis of the two questionnaires. Chapter five highlights the study itself. A detailed discussion of teaching evaluation practice is presented through the analysis of the items of both questionnaires. The data gathered from the questionnaires are tabulated according to their average. For each part and section of each questionnaire, the subjects' responses were classified according to their average, either high, moderate or low. Chapter six consists of the summary of the study, findings, implications, and suggestions for further studies. The main findings of the study show that the final exam model reflects its form in the teaching and evaluation practices taking place in the present reading classes. They also show that reading texts included in the Reader's Book appear to be neither interesting nor suitable for students. Moreover, they sound neither manageable within the time limit nor suitable for students' level. Teachers' use of various instructional teaching aids in reading classes also appears to be generally inferior. Continuous. assessment receives low attention during reading classes. Students' results in both continuous assessment and final exam are taken as an end and never used to make further changes or to evaluate the course or the teachers' and students' performance. In the light of the above findings, the study recommends that reading texts of the Reader's Book and the final exam reading model and system should be reconsidered. | |
