Abstract
ABSTRACT: This thesis considers the performance of MIMO relay Amplify and forward (AF) systems. The capacity and performance investigations are carried out assuming a correlated fading channel. Two-hop and multi-hop system models are studied. A realistic outdoor spatial statistical clustered (OSSC) channel model is and applied in the simulations of MIMO relay systems. This model is concurrent with the special channel model (SCM) model that is adopted by 3GPP standardization body to be used for cellular communications applications. The path loss calculations for the OSSC model are based on the Urban Hata model. Also, a coverage analysis is presented for different configurations of MIMO relay AF systems with different number of antennas at source, relay and destinations. Uniform Linear Array (ULA) and Uniform Circular Array (UCA) antenna structures are implemented. The outage probabilities and ergodic capacities of systems are also compared when employing ULA and UCA. The resilience of the basic MIMO Relay AF system over the normal MIMO system has been demonstrated. Ways of improving relay gain via filter matrix design were also demonstrated. A comparison between three different relay filter design namely blind, singular value decomposition (SVD) and matched filter (MF) was discussed. This work is extended to design a relay multiuser MIMO system with linear precoding beamforming. Channel inversion (CI), Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) precoding, block-diagonalization (BD) and Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) are the three precoding techniques examined. Simulations were carried out to compare different MU-MIMO relay schemes performance under correlated channel by calculating both bit error rates and sum rate capacity
