| Abstract | Abstract : This study investigates the influence of literature on the development of key 21st-century skills-specifically problem-solving, critical thinking, and cultural awareness-among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in Bahrain. A mixed-methods approach was employed, utilizing three methodologies for a comprehensive analysis. A quantitative assessment of 120 past literary papers from both Level 1 and Level 4 courses at a Bahraini university demonstrated students' development of 21st-century skills. In addition, interviews with literature professors provided insights into course design aimed at fostering these skills, while interviews with literature graduates captured perceptions of literature's impact on their development. Findings indicate that engagement with literature significantly enhances students' cultural awareness, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, promoting emotional engagement and critical discourse. The urgency of curriculum integration of diverse literary works addressing complex ethical and cultural issues through active learning strategies is emphasized. This research highlights literature's essential role in equipping EFL students to navigate the complexities of the modern world. However, the limited scope of the study suggests the need for further research to explore the broader implications of literature in education. Additional studies with larger sample sizes will enhance the generalizability of the results and contribute to understanding literature's impact on skill development in diverse learning contexts. | |
