| Abstract | Abstract : Optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) is a critical issue in electrical power engineering. This practical problem is a highly constrained and non-linear optimization problem. The operating time of each relay depends on two independent variables called plug setting (PS) and time multiplier setting (TMS). The sum of all the operating times of these DOCRs, when they work as primary relays, is the objective function of such a problem. As the network becomes larger and more complex, the number of relays will increase, and thus finding the optimal solution becomes very difficult. Since 1988, many numerical techniques have been employed. However, there are still many open areas that are not covered in the literature This thesis has multiple contributions; it uses a new population-based evolutionary algorithm called biogeography-based optimization (BBO), evaluates the performance of ten types of constraint-handling techniques, proposes a new subalgorithm to avoid the infeasibility condition due to the selectivity of constraint, and presents a new hybridization between the BBO algorithm and the standard linear programming algorithm (BBO-LP). The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated using different test systems, and the results are compared with the performance of other optimization methods presented in the literature. The results show that the hybrid model, with the proposed modifications, outperforms many other optimizations presented in the literature in terms of feasibility, quality, and processing speed Moreover, this thesis presents an extensive study on the performance of the original forms of the BBO algorithm by comparing them through 23 benchmark functions with different dimensions and complexities. Furthermore, this study also attempts to solve the root problem of the original BBO forms by addressing their exploration weaknesses instead of solving their effects through complicated methods. Two modifications are proposed: modifying the probabilistic selection process and minimizing the range of the clear duplication process. The proposed essential modifications on BBO (BBO-EM) are extensively tested on 120 test functions with different dimensions and complexities and then used to create four advanced BBO models based on an updated search space, respectively called single-updater bounds (BSU-BBO), multi-updater bounds (BMU-BBO), iterative search space (ISS-BBO), and adaptive variable bounds (AVB-BBO). Finally, the optimal coordination of the 3-bus system is solved again by ISS-BBO Also, different time-current characteristic curves (TCCCs) are extensively studied on the 15-bus system | |
