Abstract
Abstract : This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a counseling program based on cognitive schema therapy in enhancing marital adjustment among newly married couples. The program was designed according to the theoretical framework of early maladaptive schema therapy developed by Young, and it was applied to a sample of eight newly married participants of both genders, using a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measurements. The study utilized the Marital Adjustment Scale, which measures four main dimensions: marital agreement, marital satisfaction, marital cohesion, and emotional expression. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze the differences between the pre-test and post-test measurements. The results showed statistically significant differences between the pre-test and post-test mean scores in the marital adjustment dimensions, indicating that the counseling program contributed significantly to improving marital adjustment among the participants Regarding the dimensions of marital compatibility, it became clear that there were statistically significant differences between the pre-test and post-tests in the marital satisfaction dimension, favoring the post-test. However, the significance of the differences between the pre-tests and post-tests was not clear in the remaining dimensions (marital agreement, marital cohesion, and emotional expression). The study concluded with several recommendations, most notably: implementing longer-duration therapeutic programs, conducting follow-up measurements, applying the program in individualized couple sessions rather than group sessions to respect cultural privacy, and expanding the range of targeted schemas within the program.
