| Abstract | ABSTRACT : A new approach to shorten and improve the composting efficiency of plant residues using allochthonous diverse enzymatically active groups of bacteria and actinomycetes was applied. The approach also included timely inoculations of exponentially growing allochthonous cultures at start, after 3 weeks and 6 weeks respectively. The allochthonous microorganisms used in the present investigation were isolated from post composted materials. Isolation criteria were based on selection of enzymatically diverse groups of bacteria and actinomycetes able to produce cellulolases, pectinases, amylases and proteases and possess positive interactive relationships. Ash content, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio and extracellular enzymatic activities were used as parameters to measure microbial activity, length of composting period, stability and ripeness. Four bins properly designed to provide better aeration (each 50 liter capacity) were used as experimental containers. Each bin contained 4 kg plant residues. Bins number 2, 3 and 4 were inoculated with enzymatically diverse groups divided on the basis of their enzymatic activities as cellulolytic and pectinolytic microorganisms in bin number 2; amylolytic and proteolytic microorganisms in bin number 3 and all enzymatically active groups in bin number 4. Bin 1 was kept without bioinoculation and left for the effect of its indigenous microflora. Results were recorded numerically and statistically presented. Transformation of recorded numerical data in terms of efficiency of microbial activity proved the assumed approach where in bin number (4) microbial activities reached 99.9% compared to bin number (1) 85.5%, bin number (2) 95.0% and bin number (3) 96.3%. Moreover, C/N ratio of 10 used as indicator of stability and ripeness was recorded earlier in bin number 4 i.e. within 3-4 weeks while the other bins showed delayed stability and ripeness.
