| Abstract | Abstract : Translation is defined as an activity that consists of rendering the meaning of a text in one language and producing a new, equivalent text in another. Since translation is normally written, it is intended for a target reader who is usually identified by translating institutions, e.g. companies, government, newspapers, literary publishers... etc. This study will look into the role of Bahrain Tribune and the Gulf Daily News as examples of translating institutions in assessing and judging translated texts and the socio-pragmatic considerations that play a role in editing the texts before publishing them. Translation theories do not seem to clearly define the role of the target reader in translation; therefore, this study will be an attempt to give insights in this respect. Fifteen translated local news reports from Arabic into English were submitted to a sub-editor at Bahrain Tribune to edit and make them ready for publishing. The translated versions and the edited ones were then analyzed to find the norms and considerations of the newspaper of what makes a text worth publishing, i.e. the norms and conventions of judging the translation quality. Ten translated news reports were also taken from the Gulf Daily News and were then analyzed to find out whether the strategies differ from one newspaper to another. Foregrounding and backgrounding of sources and news is found to be one of the strategies employed by the English newspapers in editing translated news reports. Other strategies are also used by the newspapers, such as summary translation, connotations and theme/rheme arrangements. The outcome of the study suggests that translation in the academic set-ups should pay attention to such strategies to bridge the gap with the real-life translation. | |
