Abstract
ABSTRACT : In this study the subject of ionising radiation was reviewed and survey measurements were made to investigate the effects of radiation protection procedures in the handling of unsealed and sealed sources, and X-ray emitting equipment, in the University of Manchester, University Institute of Science Company Limited. of Manchester and Technology (UMIST) and Petro Spec Thus, based upon the determined that:-survey results discussed, it was 1. in the first part three measurement radiation doses in These measurements of this study (unsealed methods five were used biochemistry to sources), assesS the laboratories. (surface contamination. measurement method, air monitoring method and dosimetric method) indicated results at much lower than recommended levels. 2. in the second part (X-ray emitting equipment) where also three methods of surveying was used. (direct measurement and used as Two of these fixed film badge, which were alternatives), indicated low levels of leakage. The third method (an investigation method), indicated some breaches of the standards and regulations. 3. in the final part of this study (sealed sources), direct measurement a method was used to measure the doses or exposure to radiation in four techniques (Chapter IV). It was determined that the highest dose rates were recorded from the irradiation technique in the Pharmacy Department in Manchester University. This originated from the cable hole port and from the ventilation stack outside building facility. However, advice and protection procedures were recommended for each chapter. and in general according to the handling method of each radiation source with suggestions for further studies, which were not covered by this investigation.
