| Abstract | ABSTRACT: Recently, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology has been widely used to improve the transmission signal quality, coverage and channel capacity for modern wireless communications systems. The performance of MIMO systems that utilize multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas, is directly dependent on the correlation properties of the radio propagation channel. The correlation properties depend on the antenna configuration, Doppler spread and the distribution of scattering objects between the transmitter and receiver. Therefore, the main scope of this thesis is to develop and analyze a realistic channel model that includes accurate signal fading correlation properties. The capacity and system performance of wireless LAN systems are investigated under the developed realistic channel model. Also, the objective is to study the performance of the latest Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11n emerging standard and recommend the best environment for applying this technology. The Thesis starts with a thorough survey on the different existing MIMO channel models. Physical, analytical and standard model classifications are presented. Comparisons that highlight the theoretical differences and limitations for each model are provided. In this Thesis, a stochastic spatial clustered (SSC) channel model is presented. This is followed by a more realistic spatial and temporal clustered (STC) channel model. This realistic model involves treating reflection paths as clusters of rays. Each cluster has a power at different delays that is related to different tap coefficients in discrete time. The model accounts for six various real propagation scenarios that represent a variety of indoor environments. The STC channel model is developed to modify the existing IEEE 802.11n standard model to consider uniform circular array (UCA) for MIMO systems. The impact of channel model selection on link performance of systems is investigated for uniform linear array (ULA) and UCA configurations. The study includes also the effect of varying the elements spacing of array geometries and their orientations at both ends. The information-theoretic channel capacity of correlated channels is studied when channel state information (CSI) is known at the transmitter. The effect of line of sight (LOS) existence is also demonstrated. Also, the performance analysis of Vertical Bell Laboratories Space-Time (V-BLAST) system is investigated including the effect of fading correlation. Simulations of MIMO systems are developed employing the SSC channel model for both ULA and UCA geometries at the receiver. Different receiver detection techniques are implemented that include linear zero forcing (ZF), linear minimum mean square error (MMSE), successive interference cancellation (SIC), parallel interference cancellation (PIC) and maximum likelihood (ML). Spatial fading correlation effects on the system performance are investigated utilizing the SSC channel model for various signal to noise ratio (SNR), angle of arrival (AOA), angular spread (AS), inter-element spacing distance between array elements. Moreover, the impact of different channel conditions to the detection performance is presented using the developed STC channel model. Finally, to fully analyze the MIMO system performance, precise channel state information is required at the receiver. A number of training-based channel estimation methods are studied including least squares (LS), scaled least squares (SLS), linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE), and relaxed minimum mean square error (RMMSE). The optimal training sequences are driven numerically and are utilized in the numerical simulations. In this Thesis, the different channel estimation methods are implemented in the MIMO system simulation that utilizes the SSC channel model. The impact of channel spatial correlation on the channel estimation error is evaluated for both ULA and UCA antenna. It is confirmed that the presence of spatial correlation can help to achieve a better quality CSI at low SNR. The performances of channel estimators are investigated when applying optimum and orthogonal training sequences. Also, channel estimation errors and capacity for ULA and UCA ΜΙΜΟ systems are compared under various AOA and AS values. | |
