Lexical Errors of Appropriateness Made by Third And Fourth Year Bahraini EFL Students at The University of Bahrain

Abstract

Abstract : This study is concerned with error analysis of third year and fourth year Bahraini EFL students with focus on lexical/semantic errors occurring when using synonyms, antonyms, idioms and collocation. The study presents an analysis, through error analysis, of some characteristics and sources of lexical errors made by third year and fourth year Bahraini EFL students majoring in English at the University of Bahrain. The results of the study indicate that lexical errors are mostly due to intralingual reasons. And they are not likely to decrease or diminish with the increasing exposure to the target language unless a vital change occurs in the method of teaching lexical relations. It is verified in the study that lexis is not a random list of words; it is a rule governed area and should be taught in a systematic way.
