Professional Skills Programme at Arabian Gulf University Students' perception and predictive validity of examination scores

| Abstract | Abstract : The acquisition of appropriate clinical skills is a key element of health care education. Therefore, assessment of students' performance on the acquired skills using valid outcome measures is an important component of clinical skills training programme. This study attempted to investigate students' opinion about pre-clerkship clinical skills training programme at Arabian Gulf University in preparing them for the clerkship phase and determine the predictive validity of the assessment method used in this programme on future performance. The perception of 110 clerkship students (75 female and 35 male) was obtained and scores of 135 students were analyzed. Results showed that students are generally positive about their training, and the results of the assessment could predict students' performance at the clerkship phase, however, the written examination component is a better predictor than skills examination of history taking or physical examination (r = 0.945, 0.546, and 0.645 respectively). Recommendation were made in regard to future research about this programme by taking opinion of the teachers and studying the validity and reliability of the assessment method that is currently in use. | |
