Abstract

Abstract : Although walking is the most common sport among the general public in the Kingdom of Bahrain, walkers suffer many injuries. It has been observed that injuries have been a major crippling factor in dropping out and not carrying on with practicing such a sport. The importance of this thesis arises from the fact that it was an attempt to explore the common injuries and related factors associated with walking that male and female walkers have faced in public fields. The descriptive approach was used by survey. Subjects were chosen from male and female walkers in public fields. Selection relied on a direct question about whether or not they participated A total of 375 participants were surveyed, of which 214 were males (57.1%) and 161 were females (42.9%). A self-constructed questionnaire was used. Construction relied on examining and analyzing the literature to determine injuries and the factors associated with them. The questionnaire begins with two questions in order for a walker to be eligible for the study. The two questions are: Do you walk? and Have you ever suffered from an injury from walking? The rest of the questionnaire was divided into two main sections: the first was related to general information, covering three parts: sex, age, weight and height measurements, occupation, education, and some health behavioral aspects. The second part included three parts: 1. Walking load. 2. Injuries from walking. 3. Causes of injuries. The questionnaire was introduced to 17 specialists, and corrections were made accordingly For reliability, test-retest reliability was carried out using 20 male and female walkers. A period of one week separated the test-retest and correlation coefficient was calculated Results showed that the most common injuries reported in this study were: the pain in the lower extremity and low back pain, using accordingly, the researcher recommended the use of preventive procedures to avoid injuries as follows: warm up should be emphasized, first-aid in the public fields should be available, and to use proper shoes for walking.
