| Abstract | Abstract : This study focuses on the emerging mobility concept, termed Mobility as a Service (MaaS), and its sustainable implications for transportation within the Kingdom of Bahrain. There, a narrowed focus on single-journey travel (commuting to either a workplace or higher education institution) and the transport options available in Bahrain is adopted. A mixed-methods approach comprised of both thematic and statistical analyses is adopted to interpret survey data collected from passengers to better understand their attitudes and perceptions toward different transport modes and their environmental impacts. Even though key findings strongly suggest a continuing preference for car-based transport options (along with the heightened spectrum for modal displacement of public transport offerings), the establishment of initiatives specifically based on the introduction of alternative transport modes, wider use of emissions labeling and pricing, and awareness campaigns have empirically emerged as promising options for stimulating a transition toward sustainable mobility within the Kingdom. All of this has been determined based on the inclusion of survey questions (that generated 302 responses) that assess the mobility habits and preferences of passengers in Bahrain and when traveling abroad to foreign countries and three proxy Pro-Environmental Behavior questions focusing on environmental consciousness On a conceptual level, the study also demonstrates the ongoing diversity in how MaaS is constantly being defined and redefined (in the form of newer concepts) in both a homogeneous and heterogeneous manner, with the former creating unnecessary duplication and overlap. Thus, the study concludes with a proposed framework that captures the different MaaS concepts based on common parameters that have emerged from an extensive review of the literature. A refined version of MaaS is also proposed, befitting the scope of this study: (C-MaaS) or (Commute-Mobility as a Service), which stands as a journey-specific crossover between the already established University as a Service and, the more prevalent, Corporate Mobility as a Service conceptualizations. Lastly, the adoption of emissions modeling techniques for more detailed analysis of the sustainability and emissions impact of (MaaS) specific subgroups (blue-collar vs. white-collar employees), and socioeconomic (i.e., income levels) in Bahrain are proposed as areas for future research and consideration. | |
