| Abstract | Abstract : Due to the lack of a reliable and accurate Arabic-English dictionary that addresses Quranic usage, this thesis aims to examine the accuracy of translating Quranic terms and expressions related to Sustainable Development Goal 1. Centuries before the United Nations formally established the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, the Holy Quran referred to these principles. Given its status as a divine scripture, the Holy Quran should be prioritized in legislative discussions. The current study adopts a qualitative method incorporating an analytical approach, using Skopos theory as the framework for research. In relation to SDG 1, 15 terms and expressions are specified from three Suras: Al-Baqarah, At-Taubah, and Ar-Rum. The selected translations by Khan and Al-Hilali (2020), Abdel Haleem (2004), and Cleary (2004) are compared with those presented in Lisān Al-'Arab (1994) and the interpretations of Ibn Kathir (1998) and Al-Saadi (2000), which are subsequently classified according to Leppihalme's (1997) strategies. Results indicate that most Islamic-legal terms and expressions are frequently misinterpreted. Furthermore, the adoption of Skopos theory in Quran translation demonstrates its effectiveness. However, no specific strategy is considered superior to another in this context. Instead, it is the translator's responsibility to convey the Islamic-legal meaning to the target audience in a way that enables them to experience the text as if they were reading the original Quran. It is recommended that further study in this domain be pursued, as well as creating new, trustworthy English-language sources or developing existing ones. It aims to translate and explain Quranic terms and expressions in accordance with Shari'ah-defined meanings while considering the various types of meanings, the Holy Quran as a source text, the perspectives of interpreters, and the selection of appropriate strategies. Keywords: Sustainable Development Goal 1, Skopos theory, general meaning, Islamic-legal meaning, translation strategies | |
