AbstractABSTRACT : The aim of this report is, first to examine the validity of the use of profit center concept as part of management control system through extensive examination of the existing literature. Second, to study the organizations established in Bahrain in order to examine their approach towards such a concept. Informa-tion were obtained from various organizations in various indus-tries. The result of the literature study was that the use of profit centers in well diversified, or geographically distributed organ-izations is a necessary act to make control possible. However, it is established that proper implementation requires adequate Management Information System and management style. All the organizations studied, have made an attempt to use profit centers as part of management control system, yet, with differing success levels. Yusif Bin Ahmed Kanoo, Arab Insurance Group and Standard Chartered Bank presented the best examples for the use of such concept with some modifications to be desired in them. On the other hand hotels and most banks were poor examples of profit center implementation My conclusion is that the first step needed to be made in organi-zations in Bahrain toward more successful divisionalization into profit centers is a change in the attitude of the management society. This by no means is directed solely toward Arab nation-alities since a number of top managers in organizations under-study were expatriates. Relationships play a heavy part in Bahraini organizations which is an indication of lack of profes-sionalism.
