| Abstract | Abstract: In the past few decades the power systems have witnessed an increase in size due to rapid and growing demand of power. This imposed a problem due to the limited resources and the strict environmental constraints that caused the system to be operated near to the stability limit and to have area interconnection. This led several problems, such as system low frequency oscillations that may lead to loss of synchronism. Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices introduced by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) offer a solution to such problems. In this study a design of a smart controller for the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) based on evolutionary algorithms is carried. The UPFC is a FACTS device that is capable of controlling all the power system parameters. Therefore, it became the most versatile system among all FACTS devices. This thesis is contains six chapters, the first chapter will be an introduction of FACTS controllers, where the devices are categorized based on technology used to control the system parameters. It then introduces the UPFC controller configuration and its modes of operation. The second chapter discusses the modeling of the UPFC. It begins with a review of the UPFC load flow models that were introduced in literature. Based on the review the UPFC decoupled load flow model is chosen. The model is then investigated in order to realize different control strategies of the UPFC, then a study of the impact of installation location of the UPFC on the control parameters is discussed. The second part of the chapter discusses UPFC dynamic modeling, it compares two models that have been introduced in literature. Based on the comparison, the PWM UPFC model is chosen in this study. The third chapter introduces two evolutionary algorithms, the Biogeography Based Optimization (BBO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms. After which, a discussion of the UPFC capability to damp interarea oscillation is presented. By using these algorithms a robust power oscillation damping (POD) controller is designed by using two different objective functions. The resulting controller from each case is compared. The fourth chapter discusses the multifunction control capability of the UPFC, where a power flow controller, DC voltage regulator, bus voltage regulator, and POD controller are tuned simultaneously using the prior mentioned algorithms. At the fifth chapter, a result analysis of the designed controllers is introduced for several types of system disturbances and system uncertainties in order to evaluate the ro-bustness and the performance of the controllers. The last chapter, presents the conclusion withdrawn from the study and the ability to enhance it more in the future. | |
