| Abstract | ABSTRACT : The primary objectives of this dissertation are to analyze the relationship between insurance development and Islamic religious beliefs as an independent variable, to highlight the importance of insurance in economic growth of developing countries, to advance recommendations for promoting insurance in predominantly Islamic countries, and to review the United Arab Emirates (UAE) potential for insurance development. The methodology used in this study is the application of quantitative statistical analysis to historical economic and demographic data from two economically homogenous groups. The basic proposed hypothesis is that Islamic religious beliefs may adversely affect insurance development in a given country. A one-way, between-subjects (groups) design was chosen to validate this hypothesis. One explanatory variable and two well-known insurance development benchmarks: insurance penetration and insurance density, were selected as dependent variables. The quasi-independent variable of Islamic religious beliefs is a between-subjects factor, which may be confounded by many other participant variables, such as the level of economic development, per capita income, price of insurance, and so on. To control these variables, the selection of the sample was limited to two economically homogenous groups, namely: Group-1: 18 Arab countries, as representative of countries with predominantly Islamic religious beliefs, and Group-2: 30 Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, as representative of countries with predominantly non-Islamic beliefs. | |
