Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study was to explore teachers' use of student portfolios in classroom assessment in 6th-grade mathematics, as well as the quality of the student portfolio and the obstacles teachers face in utilizing this portfolio in classroom assessment. A random sample of 68 mathematics teachers (37 males and 31 females) was selected from the population of 86 sixth-grade teachers in the Alhofuf region of Saudi Arabia. Two instruments were used: a questionnaire to investigate teachers' use of student portfolios in classroom assessment, and a random sample of students' portfolios (31 males and 45 females). The main findings of the study are as follows: 1. A moderate degree of student portfolio use by teachers and a high degree of obstacles to use as viewed by teachers, with a grand mean (2.17) and SD (0.48). 2. No significant differences were found between male and female teachers in the obstacles teachers face related to sex and years of teaching experience 3. A moderate positive correlation between student portfolio quality and student achievement in mathematics. 4. Significant differences between male and female mean achievement in mathematics, due to female students
