| Abstract | Abstract : This study presents an experimental study of the behavior of rectangular reinforced concrete beams made out of different overlays. For each overlay two types of concrete grade is used. One is a normal concrete with the compressive strength of f' = 44 N/mm² and the other is a high performance concrete with the compressive strength of f'= 65 N/mm². The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of the partial use of high performance concrete in normal concrete beams as different layers. For this purpose, normal beams were casted having different parts made out of high performance concrete. The investigation covered the effect of this combination on the cracking moment, yielding moment, the ultimate moment of the beam. Furthermore, the mid-span deflection, ductility, crack propagation and pattern were also studied. In order to carry out these investigations and evaluate the above parameters, sixty specimen beams were prepared with a cross section of 200 mm x 350 mm and 2 m long span. High performance concrete was used as a top overlay, bottom overlay and middle segment in the normal beam. Specimens were divided into four main groups. In the first group HPC was placed on the top layer of 120 mm. In the second, the bottom layer of 120 mm was casted as HPC. The third group was fully made of normal concrete. Finally the fourth group of beams were made using HPC in the middle segment of the normal concrete beam. Each group consisted of 18 beams, which was divided into six subgroups each having a different steel ratio. The experiments carried out on sixty specimens beams have shown that the tension overlay being high performance concrete increases the cracking moment, reduces the mid-span deflection at service load in beams with low steel ratios. However, no improvement was observed on the ductility of those beams. In beams with compression overlay being high performance concrete the ductility factor was improved 43% while reduction was observed in the mid-span deflection. A reasonable improvement in ductility, mid-span deflection and in cracking moment was reduced in beams with middle segment is made out of high performance concrete. | |
